An excellent #fediverse and #activitypub explainer! (and it doesn’t even refer to any specific platform) https://youtu.be/VmSWPj0T9IQ

@andypiper @steve telephone service is also a good analogy. Lots of carriers, but anyone can call or text anyone in any country.

@steve that's a good point, the international aspect covers the different cultures and rules piece as well. Nice enhancement to the concept.

@andypiper A better analogy might be the international postal system (snail mail) that is federated and is generally effective without central governance.

@steve yes I see what you’re saying here. Initially the metaphor was quite good, but you’re right that there’s no overall governance so that aspect breaks down a bit. Still - I mostly see the hackneyed email metaphor, so this was an interesting alternative way to look at it.

@andypiper Overall, it's a very nice video. I just wish the creator hadn't compared the Fediverse to the United States. There's nothing analogous to the US Federal Government in the Fediverse. Since the USA wouldn't function well without the Federal Government (I'm sure opinions will vary), the point isn't clear to me. Said differently, "federated" can have different meanings in different contexts (nations vs software servers) and I think this video conflated multiple meanings of the word.
