#WhatsApp uses the open-source #Signal protocol… However, encryption isn’t the whole story… WhatsApp and, by extension, all #Meta organizations know you sent something, when you sent it, and who you sent it to…

tallship (tallship@zotum.net)'s status on Saturday, 25-May-2024 15:08:31 JST tallship Let's not forget that perhaps one of the most egregious encroachments upon one's privacy, let alone the unfounded presumption and requirement that one must have a mobile phone device that supports SMS messages, is the very fact that the user is REQUIRED to submit their DID as a prerequisite to completing their account onboarding - even Signal still requires this, even though you are actually able to "hide" that DID from others so that they can no longer benefit by the discovery of your Signal account through the farming of their own respective contact databases!
Those are horrific, deplorable privacy incursions, and just one reason why I refused to use Signal for the longest time.
I actually cannot speak directly to whatsapp, since I never have, and likely never will, have an account on that communications platform (for those very same reasons cited above), but I suspect the same is the case with whatsapp as it was until fairly recently with Signal.
Matrix, XMPP, and many others have no such requirements, although some of them 'may' include, at your option, the option to do so - for the purpose of password recovery alone.
Just my two cents! ;)
Thanks to Yuki and everyone else who offered up their thoughts on the matter so far :)
