AIUI, foley is very much still a thing, and has changed in many of the same ways that studio music recording has changed: recorded in smaller units and more separate layers and then digitally assembled, and yes, more synthesized and prerecorded sources, but still a delicate art performed by live humans.
@inthehands I wanted to be a foley artist for a while after I saw it profiled on the children's show Wishbone. I think I especially liked the idea of working in something called a pit.
I imagine lots of the work has been replaced digitally now but hope I'm wrong there
