   As folks discuss the plundering of the open internet/sharing economy by the data-hungry LLM trainers, it seems like a good time to remind ourselves to find something other than "the tragedy of the commons" as a metaphor. On the racist, terrible origins of that phrase:

     “Digital Colonization” works too as that is exactly what is happening.

     “Digital” Things existed, were owned, bought, sold and paid for by others.

     LLM owners went “exploring” their ignorance of those existing things, capturing and appropriating what they came across as they did not yet own it but never bothered to find out is someone else did.

     This is “tragedy of avarice”, not the commons.
