   it's wild that sawstop just has a patent on their tech that a) is just a voltage meter and a brake, and b) could save a BUNCH of people limbs. like if they made airbags proprietary or something

     @Sylvhem @wxcafe patents are for engineers what papers are to researchers. you get one even if you have no real intention of litigating. the government records your invention forever and you get a neat little USPTO number to wear as a pin.

     @wxcafe Yeah, apparently the person behind the invention tried to sell their idea to every saw manufacturer and they all refused because it would have raised the price of their products. So in the end they resorted to make their own saws.
     This story is absolutely wide.

     to be fair they did try to licence the tech to everyone in the industry and apparently they all refused, and now the govt is trying to make it a requirement to have some safety system and they have vowed to release the patent if the mandate passes, so. not unequivoquely bad
