First heard about it in middle school and today there's still little progress. So I posted a rant about that online, LessWrong later paid me a cash prize for that rant. Several people once involved in this (and a related) project personally replied to me that knowing the connectome is not enough, it's like a neural network but with no weights. What we need is a neural-recording system that can do perturbation analysis on living worms. This should be possible with today's tech, but basically nobody wants to fund it due to lack of practical applications.
