Despite what Big Gas claims, Europe doesn't need this LNG: They're switching to renewable energy massively.

"Even as gas consumption declines, European energy security is being used to justify the buildout of LNG export and import terminals."

This piece ends by cautioning against LNG "overinvestment":

This piece points out that US gas prices went from $3.48 per million BTU in the seven years before LNG exports were permitted in 2016, to $3.37 in the seven years following that.

Fine. But the studies don't say by how much more the price would have fallen *without* the exports. Also the piece points out that exports caused huge spikes in gas prices when extreme weather disasters hit.

"Ten days ago Joe #Biden did something remarkable, and almost without precedent – he actually said no to big oil.

You can tell what a big deal it is because of the howls of rage coming from the petroleum industry and its gaggle of politicians."

The Biden administration suspended new permits for natural gas terminals. Can we see more of this kind of backbone?

"Far from being a boon, #NaturalGas has been a trap, one that the industry now wants to catch the rest of the globe in.

We now live on a planet where the cheapest way to produce power is to point a sheet of glass at the sun; there’s no reason not to go straight from coal to #RenewableEnergy, with no intermediate stop at gas."

"A bill to strip the power of President Joe Biden's administration to freeze approvals of liquefied natural gas exports passed in the Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives on Thursday.

The legislation needs to be passed in the Democratic-controlled Senate and signed by Biden to become law, both of which are unlikely."

      https://www.reuters.com/world/us/us-house-vote-bill-reverse-bidens-lng-pause-2024-02-15/

This is why the House doesn't get much actual legislation done: they're too busy posturing.

#Japan also doesn't need US gas. Demand is shrinking.

"Once the largest global importer of liquefied natural gas (LNG), Japan’s demand for the fuel has fallen rapidly in recent years. As a result, the country’s gas and power utilities face a surplus of LNG purchase commitments."

So now they are cultivating demand for gas in South and Southeast Asia. So those countries need less gas too.

Germany doesn't need US - or anyone's - gas: they're going to shut down their gas grid.

"The German government has kickstarted the planning for a gradual decommissioning of the country’s gas distribution network in order to organise a smooth transition to climate-neutral heating for consumers and operators.

The paper says it will be a challenge to reconcile climate targets, supply security and economic efficiency during the natural gas phase-out."

"Sixteen US states, including Texas, Louisiana and Florida, have filed a lawsuit to challenge the US federal government’s ban on approving applications to export liquefied natural gas

If all proposed #LNG projects were to go ahead and ship gas overseas, it would result in 3.2bn tons of greenhouse gases – equivalent to the entire #emissions of the European Union.

As pointed out upthread, Europe doesn't need this LNG, and neither does Japan.
