Three White surfers found dead in Ensenada, Mexico while on a surfing safari. I think I can guess what happened. The Mexicans tolerate White American tourists insofar as they surrender their self-respect on cue. If you act too comfortable, wealthy, and happy in Mexico, the police will magically come ruin your vacation with some ridiculous fake charges and planted contraband and expect you to bribe your way out of it.
These three latest victims probably got too comfortable because many repeat visits yielded few scary incidents and a reasonable expectation of safety. But some little booger of a man with cartel connections probably initiated an incident with the tourists where he snubbed or otherwise provoked them into objecting on their own behalf and escalated the whole thing into a triple homicide.
As a socal native, I've been to Tijuana plenty of times and I've heard many stories. I've had friends go to Tijuana just to do some daytime bargain shopping and international experience getting and end up in Mexican jail for three days.
The last two times I went there I was in a group of all Mexicans and I spoke pretty good Spanish. My crews were 95% Mexicans back then and they'd invite me out for some partying now and then. Tijuana is alluring because there is no last call; the bars and clubs just keep going and going. The aire of celebration can lure White tourists into an extremely dangerous comfort zone where they forget they're in a city that is usually holds the title for murder capital of the world.
I love Tijuana and I love nicotine and so I avoid both for the deadly poisons they are. It's too easy to have a great night of dancing and partying and bar hopping that ends with being decapitated in a ditch because the wrong hombre's señorita liked your sarcastic drunken dance moves. Now I'm married to a very smart woman and that's more dangerous than Tijuana or tobacco, so I am still getting my thrill fix out of life.
