Okay, tech-savvy people of the fedi, I am asking for your advice:

What speed of internet do I *actually* need for home use?

I'm located in the U.S. The most intensive things I do with my wireless are Zoom & streaming.

I'm moving soon and everyone wants to sell me "gigabyte" service. I'm reasonably sure, based on my own research, that's overkill.

But the question remains: What lower speed do I need?

    Thanks in advance!

I’m a heavy internet user with a family who streams video at big-TV size and downloads multi-gigabytes developer tools and crap like that.

We have half-gig service (500mbps both directions) and it’s more than ample. Half that would probably suffice. Usually the bottleneck is the service on the other end, not our connection.

What •does• matter: provider and connection reliability. Fiber is better. Not Comcast/Xfinity/Qwest is usually better (ours is a city ISP).
