Today for Rewind Wednesday, I reflect on an era that has been highly mythologized in our understanding of journalism’s history.
The hard fact is: Murrow faced the global and domestic traumas of his time, and the many inadequacies of his media climate, as best he could—and we can and must do no less today.

  It might be hard to imagine today, in our era of 24/7 multimedia news coverage, but there was a time when major media outlets were reluctant to leap to live broadcasts. Where was the dignity in a radio outfit offering breathless coverage of breaking news events, when some media platforms could be used to provide educational and cultural programming instead? Also, what was the profit model in such a venture, when trying to compete in a world that already offered twice-daily newspaper editions?

    Television addiction
    
    Television addiction is a proposed addiction model associated with maladaptive or compulsive behavior associated with watching television programming. Analysis The most recent medical review on this model concluded that pathological television watching behavior may constitute a true behavioral addiction, but indicated that much more research on this topic is needed to demonstrate this. The compulsion can be extremely difficult to control in many cases. The television addiction model has parallels to other forms of behavioral addiction, such as addiction to drugs or gambling, which are also forms of compulsive behavior. Recognition Television addiction is not a diagnosable condition of DSM-IV.
