There is an annoucement system built into Mastodon servers where the admin can make an announcement to all of that server's members on the front page.

Most admins don't use it very often, usually just for announcing upgrades or whatever, but if a server admin wanted to use it for some sort of regular update they could?

If there's an annoucement, it appears as a megaphone icon at the top of your server's timeline.

My horoscope said not to wax nostalgic, but I couldn't help reminiscing about the ancient Usenet custom of weekly FAQ postings. Perhaps this might be something that could be built into the #Fediverse servers; they have their info page on the node home, but who ever goes there twice? Or perhaps start folks out subscribed to the node's welcome channel that would send a timed series; once up to speed, folks just unsub!

      No, posts don't. Sorry!

Your posts will remain where they are BUT... they will have a redirect to your new account, so people who find your old account's posts will still see your new account's profile.

This is why it's a good idea to NOT delete your old account when you transfer accounts. It acts as a signpost to your new account.

If you're using a computer, just hold your mouse over the image.

The official app doesn't yet support showing descriptions, though you can add them.

There are third party apps that support descriptions you could try? Third party apps are really good on Mastodon, they have been around a lot longer than the official app and they have more features:

If you're wanting a simple quick way to explain how Mastodon works, there's an official animation from a few years ago which goes over the general principles. Here's a copy of it someone uploaded to the Fediverse:

      https://tilvids.com/w/hRzMpJwSkqEK3ZTNPbSuqu

The original video is on YouTube if you prefer that:

      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPSbNdBmWKE

The principles explained in the video also apply to the whole Fediverse that Mastodon is part of: many servers talking to each other to form a single network.

@feditips okay but what’s the point of creating all these instances? Seems like a lot of work to achieve the same total outcome as Twitter. Wont the popular instances eventually push out the smaller ones? Are people willing to find which one works for them best or just join the big ones? This video tells you the HOW of this system but not the WHY or the importance of this system.

Yes one server could be bought, but there are thousands of servers with new ones opening all the time.

Anyone can start their own server starting from about $6 a month (including all tech stuff done for you).

If some evil corporation bought out a server, that server's users would move to a different server.

The way the Fediverse is structured means that it can't be bought out. The software it runs on is licensed in a way that cannot be controlled by corporations.

@feditips what if someone bought all the fediverses? How much would it take for them to sell? Small ones a few thousands. Maybe fee million for larger ones? These videos makes claims that are obviously ludicrous. Grand statements that have no truth. Networks are like websites. They can be owned. But the Fediverse is like the World Wide Web; a new site can always rise on its standard to compete. It allows completion if need be. The ability to compete needs to be more pushed.

If they're happy with what they have, then there's no problem.

But the important point is that they have the option of moving, and so do their friends. And if someone does move, they can still stay following each other.

On the Fediverse peope can change servers while still keeping their followers and follows.

On Twitter, Facebook etc there is no such option.

@feditips you assume those servers users would move. What if they don’t care? What if they aren’t an activist like you? What if they are just average users who are comfortable with what they got and don’t care it changed ownership? The Fediverse as a new Internet is what needs to be pushed. A new avenue for competition between ideals.

      No.

      Think about your telephone.

Does any single company control all the world's phone networks? No.

You can choose whatever phone provider you want, move to another provider, move country etc but still make calls to everyone everywhere because all the providers talk to each other.

      Email is the same.

This is how all communication networks used to work before Twitter and Facebook tried to take over and centralise stuff.

There's a video about this here:

@feditips yes there is. You tell your friends on said platform you’re moving to a new one and they come along. On Fediverse let’s say Musk buys all the big ones. Can’t he then block any other ones from talking to his. So if I move off Musk’s owner popular fediverses onto a different one but he blocks alll that aren’t his won’t my friends who didn’t move off too be unable to see my messages?

Sure, servers can choose to block other servers.

Server owners can run in a completely isolated mode if they want. (It even notes this as a possibility in the Masto video.)

But once people are used to being able to talk to different servers, it becomes difficult to put the genie back in the bottle.

Google hasn't dared stop Gmail working with other email providers for example.

You're right that there are always dangers, but a federated structure minimises them.

@feditips what if the owner of the Fediverse blocks outgoing and incoming communication from any server they don’t own. They buy the apps people use and modify the code if it currently doesn’t allowing blocking to then block if they want to?
