I did something to screw up my Nobara install quite some time ago, and have been waiting for Gnome 46 to land on some good distro to switch over and hopefully get my pc back to good standard.
After hearing good stuff about #Bazzite that's what I'm installing right now. Having high hopes. But they are lowered a bit by that bad installer. Can't remember last time I saw such a bad installer, and no live USB? What?
I hear new people come to Linux trough this distro? That's impressive!

Then on first boot I get this blie screen reminiscent of BSOD with some tiny text on it asking me about something named MOK. No info whatsoever. I search online and people say it's about secure boot and I should disable it. So when the pc suddenly restarts for no apparent reason I go into bios to turn off SB, but it's already turned off!
Rebooting gets me back to the blue screen, but now the option I chose last time is not there anymore, and I select continue boot, and it boots up.

I'm greeted by a Setting up Bazzite window, which looks nice enough. The problem is just thst it's full of options that I don't understand and doesn't give me any info to understand them. "Add input group to current user", what does that mean?
Oh, another problem is that the laptop monitor is set as the default, not my external, and I need to know to close the Overview, right click the background and go to display settings. I think select default monitor should be the first thing in the setup.

Then I'm asked if I want to let Gnome ssh-askpass to inhibit shortcuts. Wtf does that mean?
I'm having more and more of a hard time believing new people actually comes to Linux for the very first time trough #Bazzite and stays! Who are the people who don't care about the nerdy stuff who is met by this and actually gets trough it all without freaking out?
This doesn't mean that the distro itself necessarily is bad! But people have to get to try it, and all of this makes that seem unlikely.

After that there's a long list of applications I can install. Thankfully I've used Linux for 18 years, so I know what most of them are, because there's no information about that, except for the general category they're in (like "Gaming", with the useful extra info: "rocks and stone").
And now I notice that I'm connected to the wifi that I chose during the installation process, but I don't have internet. And even though I'm connected to power, the battery indicator does not say I'm charging.

Rebooting after the setup does not give me that blue MOK screen again, thankfully.
But after logging in I do get the same Setting up Bazzite application, with the default settings checked, not the ones I chose last time!
So did my settings save or not? It seems not, since I don't have the apps I chose installed.

Ok, more stuff seemed to happen during this round of using the setup application, I guess it needed internet and couldn't just tell me I wasn't connected the first time?
And after reboot the applications I chose seems to have been installed.
But yet the setup application runs yet again! And the default settings are checked again. Which is confusing. There's no apparent switch to not have this app autorun on boot.

There's an application called System Update. I thought I should probably run that first. Well, it opens a terminal with some text in it and a blinking cursor. Then nothing happens.

Oh, after many, many minutes of that, suddenly it started the update process! Why?

Ah, after restarting after the update process the setup utility is not autostarted.
And running System update again now does the update process immediately, no waiting this time.
But what if I was a new, regular user and didn't wait last time? What if I hadn't even noticed the system update tool at all, seeing as it's hidden under a Utilities submenu in the applications list? Would Bazzite prompt me to update after a while, or would it just let me run with no updates forever?

There's quite a few extensions installed by default here. That's a good thing! I use many more extensions myself. But one of them is incompatible with Gnome 46. Which kinda makes me feel uncertain about how well they made sure that everything is in top shape for this release. It did come very quickly after the Fedora release its based on. Maybe too quickly?
BTW, there's also Fedora branding in the installer.

Opening up GreenWithEnvy I just get an error message asking me if I'm sure the proprietary Nvidia driver is installed!
Isn't that kinda the whole point of this thing that I'm supposed to not have to think about that stuff!?
I can see no application here for installing any drivers!

So for the actual reason why I went with #Bazzite: Playing games I've just barely been able to play before.
There's a few games I've been able to play, but with very low graphics and/or sluggish, which I hoped a gaming optimized distro would make work better.
So far I've tested Obduction and Quern. And also Stardew Valley, which worked fine before, so it's not in the same category, I just played it since (spoiler) the others didn't work.
Let's see how it went:

Obduction: At first it seems like my hope had come true! I could actually move while the graphics settings were set to high! Amazing, I always had to set almost all of them down to to lowest. But then the glitching started quite quickly. That tearing thing that goes diagonally down from left to right, which I don't know what's called.
I tried rebooting and turning the settings a bit down, and for a few seconds more it seemed fine, then the glitching started again. This is worse than before.

Quern: Just crashed terribly after the menu. Had to close it. Tried again after reboot, this time it crashed the whole PC at the same spot. No saving it this time, had to hold down the power button.
Stardew: Also crashed in the same way as Quern had the first time. After reboot it played fine. But yeah, that already played fine even on my borked installation of Nobara, so that's not really a win for me.

Oh, and also: The default alert sound of #Bazzite is just not pleasant at all!
Yeah, I would not have believed this before yesterday, but I think actually I'm going to give Nobara another chance, after the new release with Gnome 46 comes out. I had other issues with Nobara too, but I know the biggest problem was something I did wrong, so…
I was so annoyed having to wait a whole month after Fedora releases to get the new Nobara, but I guess it's a good reason for that…

@jorge Hey. Thanks a ton for reading my thread! I'm really sorry it's so negative, I don't mean to be harsh! I really wanted this to be a great experience, and I'm just telling how it really was not because I like to complain, but because I hope it can help make it better in the future! @forteller Not much we can do about the installer or the mok stuff. The update tool for rpm-ostree also doesn't have a progress indicator so not much we can do about that either.
The other stuff we'll take a look at though, thanks!
