It's a portable software defined radio. I use it to find localized electromagnetic interference for my amateur radio hobby.

So are you trying to find feds? What does it actually do?

It's like microphone but for radio waves.
Imagine you were trying to talk to your neighbor across the street but there was a noise interfering coming from *somewhere*
This helps me find where the noise is coming from, and try to eliminate or reduce it
Of course sound is much easier than radio because we have ears. This box is one ear.

This seems a bit :tinfoilcat: what's the point of doing that? It seems interesting tho, maybe I'll buy one.

@tyler @0 @n3f_X @bot I followed HackRF when it first came out and watched Michael Ossman's radio tutorial videos, which were extremely helpful for understanding I and Q data inputs and thinking of radio as "spirals" instead of waves.
I didn't know there's a portable one with screen and mini OS now. I may have to get one.

What do you guys talk about?

My purposes are not really tinfoil.
I have a HF radio and if certain appliances are on, I can't hear anything/talk to anyone. This helped me find out what things I need to disconnect if I want to talk to people over the radio.

@bot @tyler @0 @n3f_X don't worry about it, ham radio has the most boring conversations on the planet (literally)
it's more about making the connection than the content of the conversation

@bot @0 @n3f_X @tyler LoRa is short-range (a few miles at most under typical conditions) but doesn't require a license and can be legally encrypted, so it has a lot more practical uses.

I bought their original board years and years ago. Sold it to my friend, bought a new one last year.
This is a "portapack" with "mayhem" firmware. Many versions so make sure you get the right one, if you buy one.

It's a way to send text msgs without any cellular, it uses LoRa radios, and it's rather mature, perhaps already into consumer devices.

Other users are right - it's mostly boring old people. But sometimes I'll get to talk to someone about current events. I got in touch with a racist man from Alabama and told him he was right.
I use it more for it's global connectivity features with data modes though. You can send email from just about anywhere if you have a computer interface for it.
It's just a fun hobby.
