I also like it when individuals in those stories defy the characteristics of their race and become warriors or adventurers. They make great underdogs, and their radicalization punctuates the need to defy the evil characters.

As problematic as it can be, I like it when a sci-fi/fantasy world has races with characteristics that are more feckless and derpy than others. The universe shouldn't be composed only of warrior classes; it needs it's Hobbits, Podlings, or Ewoks.
