   British IVR systems are torture even compared to the American ones.

   Guess wrong about which option you should choose? It'll just hang up on you.

   Mashing zero for an operator? LOLNO.

   Have a problem the people programming the system didn't think of? Good luck figuring out what option actually lets you talk to a person!

     @ryanc I know that I'm not the median caller but I'm like, if I could do this without talking to a human, I would!!!! Trust me!!! They should have like a special cheat code that only people who love automation will find so they can immediately shunt you into the hard questions queue

     @brouhaha Ultimately, the goal is to maximize profit. Rationally, that should involve balancing the cost savings of reduced staffing requirements vs the business lost by infuriating customers.

     Cultural factors and what the rest of the industry is doing play a part here though.
