@bri_seven i'm inclined to believe (per Hanlon) that this was more of an organic development with the same root causes as a lot of other puritanical movements - a real genuine problem with abuse from creepy gross men creating a cultural backlash in which every liberty the abusers claimed to espouse came to be viewed as a locus of suspicion and danger, regardless of whether those liberties safeguarded things of actual value (and even the claim that there was anything of value itself was a sign of being one of the abusers)
but even then the fash have certainly taken full advantage of it (the way bush didn't do 9/11 but it sure did him a world of good)
