    Yeah, there is a certain elegance to these lower level languages and these simpler operating systems. I'd compare it to the elegance of old electronics, where what little processing they did have, was done at the hardware level, was literally circuitry, which was so straightforward that one would be loathe to call it a microprocessor, much less an ASIC.

    I think the kind of simplicity we're discussing is the kind of simplicity that only someone educated/trained on the subject can really appreciate, though. Normies won't get it, nor should we expect them to. In practice, efforts to make things "simple" to the uninitiated are often quite complex under the hood.

      @theorytoe C is a fountain of constant delight. :dmr: said that Unix and C are very simple, it just takes a genius to understand the simplicity, and although tongue-in-cheek, it is more or less accurate: the more you look at what's happening under the hood, the more you realize that a lot of the really great shit is just twenty lines of code in the right place, things that look like they were complicated were actually almost nothing.
