#Threads gets a lot of blowback for making federation opt-in on their service.

But from an admin perspective, thank God they’re doing that because if 120 million accounts suddenly joined the #Fediverse, this could kill many servers.

Meta might have the resources send messages from that many accounts, but many Fediverse servers don’t have the resources to receive all of them.

This is why resource efficiency is such an important concern for the Fediverse at large. Hence why I’m interested in building a community of #Akkomane enthusiasts.

I think one reason #Tumblr has yet to join the #Fediverse is precisely because they’re worried about the effect all those Tumblr accounts could have on the current Fediverse.

This isn’t a matter of just turning on a switch and – BAM! – welcome to the Fediverse!

It’s something that takes a lot of planning and diligent preparation.

@wcbdata It’s not your feed that’s the concern, it’s your server’s ability to scale.

Tumblr is a giant service with millions of users. It takes a Mastodon server many resources to receive all those messages.

@christophertrottier Since about half my feed is already recycled Tumblr posts from a decade ago, I think it'll be alright. 🤪

@christophertrottier so, I don't know if this makes sense.

ActivityPub is a person-to-person protocol, not a server-to-server protocol. You won't get more stuff on your server unless you follow more people.

We are all getting bigger following lists because there are more people to follow, but I don't think it's going to be a flood. Each person only has a few accounts they can follow. Most of us top out around 1-2 thousand.

@evan I don’t know if following 1-2 thousand is a reasonable expectation for topping out.

On both Twitter and Instagram, I often saw people following 10,000+ people. I’m sure most of them weren’t actively following most of those people, but it happened.

Also, there’s the matter of people following you. You could follow one person, but if 1 million people are following you, then that presents problems if you’re on a small server. I mean, you could also limit how many people follow you – but if you’re posting a message publicly, don’t you want that message to be publicly accessible to as many people as possible?

I bring this all up because what draws people to a social network is access to a large network effect. Generally speaking, people want to be seen. Often, the draw of something like YouTube and Instagram is that you could make a living by being an influencer at something. If that’s your goal, then the idea of running a server is simply not financially feasible for many people.

Here’s a thought for you. MrBeast has 252 million followers on YouTube. If he started his own ActivityPub enabled server, how much would it cost him to have 252 million followers?
