   @mathowie I fear you're right, but I hope you're not. It is maddening that the rules just don't seem to apply. And not even in a "wow he's getting away with it by working hard at being sneaky or clever" kind of way, but more in a "let's just go ahead and *let* him get away with it and maybe even give him a hand to do so along the way."

     You might say I sound dejected and cynical, but trump plays the media like a fiddle, and news orgs are more than happy to entertain a clown that brings clicks and eyeballs. Violating FEC laws is very serious business with stiff consequences, but nothing substantive will come from this NYC case.

     I remember back in 2018 when Michael Cohen was guilty of falsifying election records he said federal charges would come down to trump too, who urged him to fake the payments on checks trump personally signed. I remember writing a “they finally got him!” tweet in 2018 and actually believing it.

     Six long years later, trump will play dumb, I can’t remember and I never told anyone anything and will get off. And he will use the case to push more disinformation about his past crimes.
