    I have once again been musing on exactly how you'd structure a farm in a world of wandering monsters.

    Estimates from Stack Exchange et c. suggested a bailey of about 100 people might survive with farmland of about 1.2 miles diameter, if the land is good.

    With a little empty space from the forest around the edge (to keep a little distance from wandering monsters), we're at about 1.4 miles diameter.

    ...and may as well do the same for the brochs ('watchtowers').

      @malin if its that precious they might build a wall/fence around it. usually there is too much farm for this to be practical.

      watchtowers and traps would be cheaper yeah.

      @malin i don't know what technology/magic level you are dealing with. but one thing they came up with IRL was seismic sensors to look out for anomalous large movements of vehicles/people. then sending patrols out to investigate.

      something cheaper would be random trip wires connected to flare guns, although that depends on how expensive gunpowder is. and probably prone to wild animals setting it off. although if there are a lot of monsters there probabaly aren't wild animals milling about.

      @malin farms don't really have a lot of active protection. they mostly fight off animals. if some other kingdom tries to mess with them they report to the kingdom they belong to and get reactively ass beaten. somewhat the same for banditry.

      they're really too big for active measures without the aid of tech/magic.

      @icedquinn
      I am very lost with this whole project. Growing up around farms didn't help the logistics.

      But keeping the monsters down helps - I have only ~4. One burrows like a mole, and giant spiders and land-octopuses could just clambor over any wall.

      The inner walls around the baileys are only there for basilisks. I figure small huts might be placed around the farmland, so people can run inside. No way anyone's out-running a giant arachnid. They must move at least as fast as a horse.
