While the US claims these growing tensions stem from China’s desire to undermine 'freedom of navigation' and stability in the region, it is instead part of a decades-long US policy of containing China.
As the US continues to implement this policy, the prospects of an Ukraine-style conflict-by-proxy erupting in the Asia-Pacific region grow.” ...

Philippine military missions that rotate and resupply troops on the ship, known as BRP Sierra Madre, have become a constant source of tension between Manila and Beijing..”

The US has emboldened Marcos with new military support, and there has been a spike in confrontations between Chinese and Philippine vessels near disputed rocks and reefs.” -

Unlike our political-economic elite and even our Congress, half of whom I estimate have houses in the US and Spain, my family and I are stuck here in an unlucky country ravaged by an uncaring ruling class. Indeed, a top-ranking Marcos official who has been the No. 1 spokesman against China late last year made a down payment for an apartment in New York.”https://rigobertotiglao.com/2024/04/10/were-now-the-us-puppet-state-and-a-boiling-frog/

They claim that China was ignoring the July 12, 2016 decision of the ad hoc arbitral tribunal on the suit filed by the Philippines against China in 2013..
Why don’t they read the decision itself? ... The tribunal's decision on this particular aspect of the Philippine suit against China all but strengthened China's hold on the shoal it calls Ren'ai Jiao.”

[..]
China says Manila is bringing construction materials to the shoal to reinforce the rusty second world war-era ship, which is at risk of disintegrating. It also accuses Manila of reneging on a promise years ago to remove the ship — a claim that the Philippines has [recently] rejected.” -

That fact should sober us up: from China's viewpoint, it is not bullying us but responding to our failure after 26 years to fulfill a promise." -

A Chinese Coast Guard vessel fired a water cannon at the Philippine boat, which Manila said caused 'significant damage' and injured several crew members. The US responded to the incident by repeating its warning about the Mutual Defense Treaty.”
