@jalcine I think the most interesting difference from pure nationalism is that there's this liberal "choice" element, so maybe it more closely resembles belonging to a political party than being a generalized patriot

It's no different (from what I'm understanding) from a kind of corporate nationalism. By buying into something and extending your worth by building an association to a faceless, non-accountable and inherently capitalist entity, what do you gain in return?
It's not protection: companies will and routinely dump and violate its fans/stans/soliders for profit.
