The problem with Mastodon is it is not truly the vision of the Fediverse.
Sure, you can move between different Mastodon instances, but your posts, along with all your photos and video, are locked in at whatever Mastodon instance (server) you were a part of. Mastodon makes it possible to archive your whole account, but they never intended for you to use that archive to move to another Fedi server.
Sharkey / Misskey, allow you to take that achieve and truly move anywhere you wish. My account, for example, is a collection of my Mastodon dot social, Mstdn dot social, and Sarkurjima dot Moe.

2 problems with that 3rd party Mastodon tool: 1) It does not save your files and keep the timeline. 2) It requires the command line between instances, so regular users cannot do this themselves.
Moving from Mastodon to Sharkey can save all your photos, videos, media, and other files, along with keeping your timeline. Anyone can do it using the web interface on any instance without owning your own instance (server).
