I only know my part of the world well, but even there, the Germanic assertion that all the land in Europe has been long parcelled out and there is no wilderness is absurd. Mountain summer pastures on land too rocky to farm, too isolated in winter to live on full time, and too far from large villages to transport perishables from, eg, are common in the Balkans, and transhumant herders used them into this century.
Not every rural economy has wheat fields and cows.

Artemisia Vulgaris (commonmugwort@social.coop)'s status on Sunday, 31-Mar-2024 00:31:26 JST Artemisia Vulgaris There’s a post going round asking if your fantasy game farming is US-style or European, and not only does Central Europe not define what is European, but *there are other options, continents of them*, so if you’re building any kind of fantasy, please consider what affects land-use patterns in many different kinds of places.
