Day 20: An Anime You Dropped
Death Note
So Death Note is one of those animes that got big just as people worldwide were becoming weebs for the first time. I had heard of it, seen the memes, and if you were a weeb in the late 2000’s - early 2010’s it was somewhere on your list.
With that reputation I decided to give it a try and I only lasted 3 episodes.
Now at first I thought I had been punked and people only praised this anime in an ironic “My favorite anime is Seinfeld” sort of way but no they’re serious.
I was baffled. Was I missing something? Were my subs wrong? Should I have watched the dub? I just couldn’t see it.
The whole anime just came off as corny and cheesy. Like ok this dude has a magic book that can kill people and becomes an egomaniac. But he’s so exaggerated in his self-righteousness that I can’t really relate to him if this is meant to be a story about how power corrupts.
And I can’t enjoy it as a story of a man named Light because I just get angry and frustrated by his decisions. These characters don’t feel like real characters that I can either relate to or find interest in. I can’t suspend my disbelief long enough to tolerate some of the bullshit put on my screen.
I don’t necessarily think it’s bad and I can see why people liked it but it definitely doesn’t deserve some of the praise it gets and massively warps expectations.
I can’t really see myself finishing it but I don’t regret giving it a shot. #30DayAnimeWeeble

Like it's not "mainstream" but I wouldn't be surprised if he was just aiming for a speicfic demographic. -

smug@smuganimeavatar.xyz's status on Saturday, 30-Mar-2024 11:03:39 JST smug Which is funny because both artists of 'Death Note' also made 'Bakuman', a manga about mangaka that are trying to become big, so you got a lot of that "We need X votes in the survey to not get canned, readers like Y" stuff in there.
Sexy Moon likes this.
