A friend was telling me about guidelines for developing and deploying new services in their company, and one of the guidelines is “new services must not use #PHP.”
I’m not making this up, and this isn’t hyperbole. They actually have this listed on their company documentation.

Conversely, a flagship MSP art museum received a massive donation a few years back that came with the condition that •all• web development must be done in PHP, because the donor heard it’s cheaper. And like idiots, they caved and said yes.
C-suites and donors playing house with tech decisions is such a dangerous game.

IIRC, it turned out to be cheaper for them because devs left for other orgs that wouldn’t yank them around like that, and then they couldn’t build software, and not building software is of course a fantastic way to save money.

I don’t even understand the dev job market anymore. And I’m not sure employers do either. It’s a mess out there.
I have a bizarre notion that people make great software with a wide variety of tools and pay should depend on value provided, not language used, what I’m just some redhead

@inthehands I was being snarky, but also, if my recent job search is any indication, many PHP developers are making below market rates, for the same kind of work that Python, Java, Go, Rust, and Ruby developers are doing.

Or does the market setting a lower rate indicate that PHP development is inherently less efficient per developer time, in which case why would any team ever slow itself down by using it?
(My guess is the answer is “neither,” but that doesn’t stop people from trying to make grandiose statements about inherent tool efficiency.)

If that is the case, then companies would be plain stupid not to use PHP. Why deliberately choose a more expensive technoogy?
