    So....while we spend endless money on war, genocide, cops, and jails, our physical infrastructure continues to rot and collapse.

    Baltimore just lost a major artery in its transportation network, with the additional tragedy of lives lost, when the Francis Scott Key bridge collapsed completely after a ship hit one of its pylon supports.

    The replacement needs to be cable-stayed, higher clearanced, and with additional protections from collisions.

      @scrottie

      They're not going to replace the Baltimore Beltway with a underground light rail tunnel.

      Also, Baltimore is NOT like the San Francisco Bay.

      Goodness.

      @AnthonyJK Happily agree with most of that, but if you'll indulge me, in the San Francisco bay, the light rail system moves about ten times as many people across the bay as the bay bridge each day, and it's a "chunnel" type thing buried tunnel under the bay.

      @mikebabcock

      Maybe not for a ship as colossal as the one that hit the HBK, but it wouldn't hurt for more conventional carriers.

      @AnthonyJK I'm pretty sure there's nothing you can do that will stop a ship that size from destroying infrastructure it collides with.
