     The abject fear whenever we leave home.

     The palpable fright whenever any of our offspring are out.

     The pounding heartbeats when we're in our own damn yards, and we hear a ghetto bird fly past.

     The prayers of thanksgiving every time we or our kids enter the house.

     They. Don't. Know.

     i pass the brown paper bag test. my oldest sometimes passes but youngest is 100% an incognegro.

     am still a Black mother and they came of age in the era of stop & frisk, hoodies & Travon Martin.

     we say “love you” every time we walk out the door because we never know if we will come back to say it one more time.

     their dad didn't want to deal with the fear; proving the yts don't wanna know.

     they're terrified of equality and being treated like Black folks.
