Every day I work on this I get a little better at React but I'm not losing the sensation that it causes as many problems as it solves. I don't feel like it's reducing complexity, it's just shuffling it around.

At least part of the problem is two libraries that I am obligated to use. They are poorly-written libraries. I have already started writing my own code that bypasses it.

This is how I feel about almost every framework out there. Not only that, but the minute it ceases to be the latest fad, all the skills acquired will become completely useless. Whereas if you learn the core language fluently, then frameworks are more often than not, unnecessary and superfluous.

@Moon@shitposter.club every single library has to be "reactified" in order to be used with react. if that doesn't give you an idea of how the react ecosystem works then nothing else will

@shibao I am leaning toward "React is very bad" rather than "I am a React beginner"

@Moon@shitposter.club it's horrifying, solid js is a decent go at using the same pattern but actually doing it well but imo you can easily hit the ceiling with it in like 15 minutes as a good developer who idk, maybe wants to do anything besides what we've decided are the only supported paradigms of building any sort of SPA webapp for some reason?? it's all a mess, I still highly recommend liveview for like 90% of typical SPAs, it'd make things so much better
like idk why people didn't want to use rails, like if it's UX you're talking about then that's bullshit, for 1/1000th of the JS you'd use for a SPA you could make any rails monolith feel like butter, i understand not wanting to use ruby but like using js spas instead is like deciding your trash can is too annoying to use so you just switch to leaving a trash bag open on your floor

@shibao I've heard liveview is great

I tend to make completely static sites and then an API using Plug or something.

@Moon @shibao greybeards tell me they don't like rails anymore because it grew out of hand. i only used it back on like RoR1 which was apparently peak.

haven't used solidjs yet. i was looking at sveltekit for the most part, or preact before that.

these days i'm told to look at either astro, litjs or htmlx, but i couldn't tell you.

@icedquinn @shibao htmlx seems wrong to me, I tried it and didn't like it. But it's not literally offensive to me like React

@Moon @shibao riotjs and preact seemed to do the cool thing react did without the baggage.

vue seems to be well liked. i do actually need some really basic web stuff if/when i go to add neural search to /z/ so i'm back on the market again :comfywoozy:
