     it's even got a drive in it! and it's not locked! yay. These caddies are too small for the usual tubular lock impressioning tools so they're a pain to pick. It's usually just easier to disassemble the fucker.

     I realized I need a serial mouse to reinstall NT4 onto this machine. but that shouldn't be a problem, right? I've got a whole drawer of old mice, I just need to grab the first serial mouse out of there.

     I was able to do the trick I did before where I repeatedly reset the SCSI host device until it is recognized.

     the problem is that it keeps falling right back off the bus when I try to run ddrescue

     I did manage to get it starting to scrape the 2gig drive.
     ddrescue has been running for 78 minutes and has saved 716kb.

     So, it'll finish around March 24th

     so the 2gig drive is still failing to work, but I imaged the 500mb drive, and it turns out this thing was running NT4.

     So I was correct! This machine smelled like NT4, and I was proven right.

     okay I spent a few minutes swearing at the bad menu system on this monitor and it turns out it's broken so that you can't mirror it left or right, it's always mirrored, but the left/right mirroring does turn off if you flip it vertically. So I did, and just rotated the monitor upside down. I guess that works.

     I'm trying to dump the drives before I do anything with this machine and one of them has broken DMA. It's really annoying because I can't seem to turn it off, and every time I google it I get results from 2002 saying "the old way doesn't work anymore", which doesn't give me any reason to expect it'll work in 2024

     OKAY I grabbed another computer, mainly because it was weird when I looked at it, and I want to look closer.
     The front says it's an Alexis Series from NCA Computer Products, and says it's a Pentium II.

     And this is the tall tower by Inwin! The classic IW-Q500, which I didn't realize I had (I thought I only had the smaller ones, the V500 and A500)

     The network card is an ISA card with no name on it, and the main chip is an FPX FP96C01 .
     Pretty sure this is an NE2000 clone, so a 10/100mbit card.

     VGA card is a PCI card without a name (seems to be a clone of an Acer ALiCAT). It's got an ALi M3147v core, and something like 2-4 mb of ram (can't find the RAM chips on google)

     It's running Windows 98. It's got some dialup network called aristotle.net set up to auto connect, but seems to be mostly cleaned, thankfully. I'm getting kinda tired of finding a ton of personal information on these.

     Here's a different angle. you can see from here that this is a SCSI CD-ROM drive, using a 50-pin connector.

     You may notice that the cable plugged into it is slightly smaller.

     This also explains another problem this machine is having which I encountered earlier where the floppy disk drive(s) aren't working.

     fuck. The drive is indeed dead. it stopped spinning when I tried to put in disk 3, which has the SCSI drivers

     CD-ROM works, but I think the top floppy drive has failed. possibly plugging it through the CD-ROM fried something.

     The bottom floppy drive is 720k, so I can't really boot my NT4 bootdisks from it
