Rubbish phone pic but can just about make out the fox in the middle of the mire in first photo and also paw tracks on the boardwalk.

1. Photo of a Dartmoor mire, long light golden brown grasses in the foreground. In the middle distance, just to the right of a wooden waymark post, stands a red fox side on to the camera but blurred at this distance. There is a gorse bush speckled with yellow blossom behind to the right, and behind that a sparse hedge indicates the route of a stream. In the background is the dark brown slope of a tor, scattered with granite boulders and gorse, and dusted with snow.

2. View across the same mire where the fox has vanished into the long brown tussocky grass. Dark tors stand out on the skyline against a blue sky mostly covered in white cloud. In the foreground a narrow wooden boardwalk spans a particularly boggy area, green with grass. Snow lies on the boards, marked only by the fox’s paw prints.

  I was headed out to do the food shopping earlier but saw there’d been another dusting of snow on the moor and I had boots in the car so…
  I passed the sledging hordes on Haytor and went to my happy place, the solitude of Emsworthy Mire nature reserve. Only a smattering of the white stuff but still pretty.
  Not having my camera I obviously had the most magical wildlife encounters. Treecreepers, goldcrests and a beautiful fox!
  Now to food shopping, in my muddy jeans.

  1. Photo of a stone barn with a red iron roof nestled between stands of veteran deciduous trees (sycamore and oak I think). In the foreground is an enclosure which in spring is a carpet of bluebells but is now dusted with snow. A half buried granite boulder and other smaller boulders lie in the centre. Behind the barn the moorland rises up to a granite tor on the skyline, the rocky slopes also dusted in snow. The sky is bright blue with fluffy white clouds, thickening on the left.
