@pfefferle Interesting. Too bad that there will be a paid API service.

@pfefferle Gravatar as an OpenID provider sounds like a sensible move for the service. But I'm not sure it's a sensible move for users to centralize "online identity".

So I'm surprised you actually 'heart' the post :) Anything you're particularly excited about?

@ctietze First: I am always excited if a platform opens up and supports open standards!

Second: I think this could solve a lot of issues in the short term, like for example if you want to move from one service to another, it is nice to have a platform that helps you manage your social graph! It is also helpful to have a central ID that helps you delegating things, when it comes to discovery for example.

@ctietze ...and I would not call it a "central" ID. It is an ID, that you could use, the same way you currently use your Domain.

A lot of IndieWeb folks are using their domain, the exact same way, to link to their "online identities" with `rel-me`.

@ctietze and to be a bit more general: I think a big issue of the fediverse is, that you do NOT have a central ID, that is independent of the platform you are using (compared to classic hosting, where the domain does not have to be provided by the same company that provides the hosting)!

Btw. this is also the main reason why Bluesky did it's own thing and built their ATProtocol on top of DIDs.

@pfefferle I'm backing everything related to self-owned online identities! Just like you mentioned, the rel-me and personal website stuff, that does make sense IMHO.

Mastodon verification of domain ownership is a bit superficial on that front. I'd love to have a stronger sense of identity there, and in the Fediverse at large, to tie together accounts.

I don't dislike Gravatar's service there, either. Am using them for ages. I just don't trust in other service's security anymore :)
