Glad to celebrate the release of The Freaks Came Out To Write, Tricia Romano’s incredible oral history of the Village Voice. I’m a tiny footnote amongst so many huge voices. 1. ANIL DASH: I had been there three months. I'd been up till two or three in the morning, working on something on the website, and crashed. My alarm went off at nine o'clock. And I turn on the TV, which is so funny - 1 would never turn on the TV first thing in the morning - but I did then. The first plane had hit, not the second. I was just like, "Oh, this is like some accident, some dumbass doesn't know how to fly a plane." I was having breakfast. The second plane hit, and I immediately got a bunch of AOL Instant Messenger— AIM-messages from people. That was this really jarring moment. We had alerts and email for when there would be a problem with the computer servers. And what it was, it was the spike in traffic: there were so many people rushing to the website within ten minutes the site started to fall over.

  @taylorlorenz Tricia did an amazing job with even just the first part I’ve read so far. Think it doubles as an incredible document of a certain era of NYC more broadly.
