@alex Gab presented itself as the home for freeze peach, but you learn there's a certain brand of christian fascism that they want you to approve. You can say it's crap without getting banned, but that's their target market, trad west larp.
@Senator_Armstrong When I joined Gab back in 2019 it still had a liberal-conservative vibe. I remember Torba even made a post saying that Tulsi and Yang were "good Democrats" (which he later deleted). And there was always a contingency of Jewish-obsessed conspiracy theorists on the website, but they were much more disenfranchised as Torba fought for the mainstream. Well at some point I guess Torba decided he couldn't win with the mainstream, so he went into full Theological Autism mode and started being like CHRISTIANITY CHRISTIANITY CHRISTIANITY. And this was maybe... a good move for his business? I'm not sure, but it seems he was able to rally a base into financially supporting him. I was kind of surprised when he then started making generalizations about "The Jews" candidly in his posts, because that's something he never would have done before. But now as a Christian Website he had religious reasons to rally the Jew haters on his platform. Ultimately I think the man just has emotional problems and he has figured out how to make perpetual victimhood work for him, so he benefits from creating bad situations for himself and then suffering the consequences. It's a pattern with him. Crazy stuff.
Gab had dissenter which was cool for like 4 months and then people stopped using it after it was pulled off the stores. He tried making a fuss but failed miserably because of shilling orange man's empty shit.
@alex Being the one place that wouldn't ban people raging at the regime attracted less than sympathetic support for cheerleading the mainstream right. Multiple deradicalization attempts were made on the core user base and all failed. They were a nice discord alternative before fedi was around, but the environment isn't the same anymore now.
@TraditionalWhiteGuy@alex Trump's generation tried and failed to win over the younger anons is basically what happened. So the angle got rebooted through new versions like Poast that are deliberately less boomerish.
@scatPolice@alex@Senator_Armstrong Dissenter was great, no wonder it had to get killed fast. If he had found a way to keep it going, he could have juiced Gab's user growth for years.
@alex@scatPolice@Senator_Armstrong That's interesting. I was looking at doing a block chain based version, to avoid running servers, but it requires web3 wallet extensions so I figured that would kill adoption. I wonder if Nostr makes it easier.
