     no one buys 3-star reviews, and bigots give 1-star reviews, so 3-stars are the ones I look at first (more for products than books.)

     @rayckeith @lilithsaintcrow @NiveusLepus Coming from the opposite side, among the reviews I write the "1 star" ones are the most popular, the "5 star" ones are the ones I enjoy writing the most, but the "3 star" ones are where I feel I can have useful insight most often.

     (granted, I write reviews for video games and I'm a video game designer)

     @lilithsaintcrow 1 star reviews don't hurt me. From my perspective, they seem a natural by product of being read. No book is made to please everyone.

     I sorta did run into it in England and Wales 25 years ago - But only if a man cursed in the presence of a woman. It was an irritation where I worked (steel industry) because I cursed and it made no sense to me that they would blush and get embarrassed if they cursed when I was in the room....

     @lilithsaintcrow @PictoPirate It's a peculiarly American cultural quirk—I haven't run into it at all in Scotland and not really in England in the past fifty years or so. (In Scotland, "fuck" is a punctuation mark.)
