     Needless to say, the Cold War almost "ended" very differently than you remember; and the critical factor that prevented it from doing so was a flesh and blood man at the controls who said to himself "there's no way the US is going to launch just five missiles if this is the big one; the machine is wrong."

     But sure, let's put the machines in charge of everything. That'll end well.
