Follow hashtags instead of people if you just care about certain topics and not life updates/shitposts.
Create lists of people (although I don't do this myself), and read those lists instead of your timeline.
See popular toots in the Explore section (caveat: limited to what your local instance sees).

I would like to see an Explore feature limited to most popular toots from people you follow.
