One of my weirdest opinions is that moving a large rock with like 100 people would be fun. Like I totally get why all sorts of ancient civilizations thought it would be a good idea

this is also interesting because a lot of very rich people seem to assume that they are the ones who will be ok.
I think I am no longer paying attention to these videos, I think planning to watch 3h of educational videos after a full day of work was maybe unrealistic

another interesting thing is that usually when societies collapse the ruling class disappears and all the things we think of as civilization - giant monuments, stuff gratuitously made of gold, large armies, and so on - but there are still some normal people who stick around doing normal people things once the dust clears. Which is for most people the important part of society.
like life probably still gets a lot harder for those people, but it's not actually the end

I do find it encouraging learning about how various ancient societies collapsed catastrophically
the Late Bronze Age Collapse around the Mediterranean is one I learned about relatively recently
obviously very bad when it happens for the people who live through it, but in the long run something survives and something new will be created
and even if it can't be prevented, whatever can be done is still worthwhile

"the reasons for the rise of La Venta also sows the seeds of its destruction," says this video with an oil refinery as a backdrop. For some reason

it's fascinating that there is evidence of trade over immense distances, and also playing sports. And of a very hierarchical society with extremely over the top displays of wealth and power. But no evidence of war. Though I guess a lot has not been preserved and so you can't really say what *didn't* exist

Has anyone ever considered making like a bunch of stone tablets explaining how things work in the current age and then burying them with a sealed canister of something that can be carbon dated

what would actually be a use for VR that would be cool would be a re-creation of historical sites that you can explore, like the buildings and so on that we think existed
actually I'd settle for just a video game type thing

I'm now watching a video of people recreating the Olmec heads with the technology available at the time
And I remember reading earlier that the Aztec were also really into archaeology and went and dug up stuff and put them in museums and it really made life difficult for modern archaeology
And I'm wondering if this is really going to piss off whatever archaeologists exist in the future
