The good news is that I avoided installing windows 95 today.
the bad news? I'm installing Visual Basic 6 instead.

image designed to scare web developers
yeah I had to do some confirmation: I loaded up a clean windows 95 machine, installed a clean visual studio 6, compiled a blank VB6 project with no code, and it set off 6 antiviruses on virustotal
gonna distribute my app by installing windows 95 into a VM and then bundling DOSBox-X with the disk image, running my app inside it
@foone I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0 on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched On Error Resume Next glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate.
@foone why didn't they call it visual basix
@foone do you need help
@cadey probably yeah but I don't think it's possible to stop me now
@foone are you planning to download Netscape with that?
@foone It might just be a quirk of my age and when I started/stopped doing web work for money, but IE6 is a lot scarier to me than IE4.
@foone with the corresponding scary warnings:
@foone Will the USB add-on be included or is that part of a fun scavenger hunt
@foone I've had completely clean python apps that're wrapped up in python's executable wrapper tools start setting off A/V alarms because of 'suspicious behavior' which was fun. Browsers then start refusing to download it.
@foone Sorry for this late answer, my ADHD ass works like this I guess.
Remember the Pentium bug?
I just remembered some Security BSides talk in which someone explained how some AV software works, specifically one AV which detects viruses by analyzing if the executable doesn't check for the Pentium bug.
So as a heads-up and with compilers that old... who knows? But maybe you already checked as well...
