    my biggest complaint about AI is we didn’t ask for it. zero popular movements took to the streets to demand AI. no one sat around kitchen tables lamenting how hard life is without AI.

    what people want is health care, housing, climate change solutions, etc We sit around kitchen tables wondering how to pay for college, get loved ones the psych and addiction support they need, or help the people on our streets who need homes

      @seachanger While here are positive uses, it feels like AI is a prime example of tech solutionism: solutions looking for problems to solve.

      @kristinHenry

      Even "machine learning" is misleading IMO, as learning requires *some* form of consciousness in order to decide when and how t apply what we have learned.

      "Large xyz model [processing]" is somewhat better--again: IMO.

      @SRLevine @seachanger Ahh...I have noticed that researchers seem to avoid the "AI" hype label. And I tend to pay a lot more attention when they call it what it is: ML and Pattern recognition.

      @kristinHenry @seachanger Also I think unless we are trying to spin it for the public most of us are pretty careful to call it machine learning (ML) since it's not AI, it's a method of pattern recognition on a scale that the human brain can't replicate, not a form of consciousness.

      @kristinHenry @seachanger The scientists working on this stuff are still making progress, but it's not flashy when you have to do all sorts of comparative tests against current methods suitable for peer-review publication so it doesn't make the news. My field has people using ML for drug discovery and it's changing the field in good ways, but it's also not sexy. You still need multiple scientists to interpret and use the data, it's not going to make the field accessible to someone at home.

      @seachanger and where did the actual research for things like detecting cancer with AI go? That was making progress, not hearing much about it now because these guys are too busy eliminating artists.

      AI should be like the James Webb telescope. put a team together and we will decide if your proposal is of sufficient social value to warrant use of the machine, otherwise sorry you can pay an illustrator a living wage to make art for the story

      how anyone could look at the abject moral and political failures of tech giants in late stage capitalism and think jeez let’s let these guys factor this mess up into the stratosphere with zero regs is truly beyond me

      @seachanger @fedithom But those things don’t make tech bros billionaires though so I guess we should just die.
