If/when the United States of America becomes a Christofascist totalitarian state, certain people will look back on moments like Unite The Right and the neo-Nazis marching in downtown Nashville and rue the day they ever told people to defeat them in “the marketplace of ideas.”

@abreaction When it happens more than twice in multiple places and regions worldwide never mind historically, the system isn’t broken.

It’s either designed for these things to occur or it’s easily exploited.

If the marketplace of ideas brings us to that point, something else was the trigger.

Fascist movements do not just spring up out of the ground. Like other extreme political changes, they happen when a system breaks.

@abreaction You misunderstand: I never said or implied there was or is a worldwide system. I said that fascism rose to power in multiple regions and nations worldwide more than twice historically.

That implies it has happened independently of each instance, which it did (ex. Mussolini’s creation of fascism (or fascismo), and the rise of Nazi Germany) Churchill’s deep admiration for fascism and fascist leaders even though Britain never truly embraced that system of government at the time. See how influence doesn’t always translate to implementation?

So my point still stands. I’d invite you to address it as it was actually stated. 😘

There is not a worldwide system.

If fascism breaks out in your country, it is because what came before it failed.

@abreaction I don’t see how my rebuttal is non-sequitur when I’m in clear disagreement with your “failure” thesis.

What I do see is you talking past me and repeating the same point I’ve already countered.

At this point, I have to disengage. Good day.

I think you are on a non-sequitur here.

My original point was that fascism arises when a system breaks down.

That means there is no hidden hand, only bad options once other options have failed.

Sort of like what happened in Rome.
