Once bluesky's at protocol becomes more viable, people will try to run their own instances. Then Bluesky the corporate entity will have policies about who they talk to and don't talk to. The only difference is that I don't think many people will choose to be part of that ecosystem. It will be a part of the fediverse. Just not a popular part. The fediverse is already littered projects that never gained widespread traction. Including attempts by corporate entities.

Marco Rogers (polotek@social.polotek.net)'s status on Wednesday, 14-Feb-2024 13:17:26 JST Marco Rogers So just to round this out, I run my own mastodon instance. With only one user. Me.
This was mostly because the idea of choosing an instance based on affinity never really appealed to me. I've never really been a "joiner".
But it also has the benefit that I can examine the visibility rules first hand. I can see all of you. And you all can see me. Even though we are technically still separate instances, and neither of us explicitly consented to federate with each other. That's the default.

Marco Rogers (polotek@social.polotek.net)'s status on Wednesday, 14-Feb-2024 13:17:42 JST Marco Rogers The important take away here is that the protocol is not what's important about the fediverse. Bluesky itself could release first class support for ActivityPub tomorrow. There are many other servers already out there that speak ActivityPub but are *not* mastodon servers. Mastodon could also change it's tech so that it will only communicate with other servers who are "real mastodon". But that would be silly. No one is in control of the fediverse. By design.

Marco Rogers (polotek@social.polotek.net)'s status on Wednesday, 14-Feb-2024 14:41:44 JST Marco Rogers What I learned today is that a lot of people on here want to draw a box around Mastodon™ as a whole. Like everybody on here is not a corporate entity and also somehow more trustworthy than another server that is Not A Mastodon.
None of that is true. Not one part of it. And I'm wondering how dangerous it is that so many people are joining mastodon with those false impressions. Especially since there is no official corporate entity responsible for educating people over time.
