     @mac_ack no it wasnt the slicing itself, i thought the updates to s were still referencing the original initialized array

     @theorytoe if the error handling is just checking the output to a second variable, like i've seen all the error handling code do, than that's a lot more elegant than importing an entire library just for errno.
