i'm glad i didn't get tempted to do jamuary this year. trying to do a streak of something is a recipe for feeling like a failure for me. i did some synth stuff i was proud of with reasonable expectations. i will not let grind culture seep into this thing that brings me joy.

forestine (forestine@sunny.garden)'s status on Friday, 02-Feb-2024 02:32:42 JST forestine i also hate the word "producer" for what i do. i am not out here to produce reams of material. i want to learn and explore and have happy accidents etc. "musician" is better but gets used pretty rarely for synth people who make all the parts themselves

🕷️spooky jepyang 🕸️ (jepyang@wandering.shop)'s status on Friday, 02-Feb-2024 05:28:50 JST 🕷️spooky jepyang 🕸️ @forestine I feel like the subtext behind those videos is always along the lines of “I spent $6k on eurorack because I got caught up in hype and the mad scientist aesthetic, but it turns out I don’t like any of the stuff modular does well.”
And I get that feeling because so many of them frame it as either “into modular” or “out of modular” and I dunno, that’s kind of weird. Like…it’s not really different than any other hardware.

forestine (forestine@sunny.garden)'s status on Friday, 02-Feb-2024 05:28:51 JST forestine there are too many youtube videos that are like "why i quit modular synths" or "why you shouldn't get into modular synths" and the takeaway is usually "it's a lot easier to produce scads of tracks to sell in a DAW" 🙄
