This is huge despite not outright calling for a ceasefire; I'm not sure how many more wake up calls the Biden administration needs to realize how isolated and *wrong* the US is on the Israel/Palestine war.

Top UN court orders Israel to prevent genocide in Gaza but stops short of ordering cease-fire
The UN's top court stops short of ordering a cease-fire in Gaza but demands that Israel limit deaths. The case was filed by South Africa accusing Israel of genocide.

@legoktm it says they have to stop killing Palestinians. I'm not sure how that's not a requirement for a ceasefire.

@nemobis there are no "buts" in genocide.

@evan I agree but also I expect Israel to argue that their 1-ton bombs don't kill any human, or not any human proven to be a Palestinian, or at least not intentionally, or at least not as necessary consequence of some action from Israel, or that dropping a bomb which causes someone's death is not "killing", or if it is then it wasn't "within its power to prevent" it, and that any Palestinian casualty is somebody else's fault. We live in a bizarro world.

@evan agreed, and that's basically what South Africa is saying.
https://accuracy.org/release/world-court-orders-israel-to-abide-by-genocide-convention-and-stop-killing/ had an interesting perspective on this:

"A ‘ceasefire’ is what you demand in an armed conflict. In a genocide you demand an immediate end to all genocidal acts and that is exactly what the ICJ ordered with immediate effect."

World Court Orders Israel to Abide by Genocide Convention and Stop Killing - accuracy.org
“This is a massive, overwhelming legal victory for the Republic of South Africa against Israel on behalf of the Palestinians. The UN General Assembly now can suspend Israel from participation in its activities as it did for South Africa and Yugoslavia. It can admit Palestine as a full member. And -- especially since the International Criminal Court has been a farce -- it can establish a tribunal to prosecute the highest level officials of the Israeli government, both civilian and military.”
