Fuck you CNN. Trump is the incumbent and he barely cleared the 50% mark.

@johnmark Yikes! He is not the "incumbent" (current officeholder). He lost in 2020.

@johnmark there's got to be a better term for it, though! The best I'm coming up with is "ex-incumbent", which seems to be the term of art for this kind of advantage.

@evan He's essentially the incumbent Republican. He's been the standard bearer for the party since 2016. Barely clearing 50% is a very weak showing.

My issue with CNN and everyone else is that this is not how the issues are being framed.

@johnmark and I absolutely agree! As the ex-incumbent, he has a huge advantage, and should have more loyalty. The fact that 8+ people ran against him, that funders put hundreds of millions of dollars into defeating him, and that 40%+ of voters are voting against him is definitely a sign of weakness.

@johnmark I think it's really interesting that we treat presidential candidates as the de facto leaders of their party -- at least between the convention and the election, and usually after the election if they've won. The fact that Trump is treated as de facto party leader despite not holding office or being the selected candidate is kind of wild.

@evan Precisely. And yeah I see your point. We need a better word.
