     just lads wandering around towns ringing doorbells letting you know they have access to a ladder and no one will stop them from accessing all sides of your home so money please.

     if it was a service theyd ring your doorbell first and ask if you wanted your windows cleaned,

     not just rock up, slam a ladder against your wall, wipe soap and water over your windows and then ring your doorbell.

     @dave0 yep, its a wild britishism, i think you can trace the lineage back to medieval festival mumming with renboys and hoeboys basically going to fancier neighbourhoods and saying hey we're a bunch of lads with farm tools, nice garden you have here, fancy giving us some 'go away' money?

     holy moly. that’s insane.

     As a person living in the America Midwest, I can think of no faster way to get shot than to lean a ladder against someone’s house, climb up, and look in their windows.
