@deane Re-reading this piece, your comment about "Are we building pages, or are we building templates" is a critical one, IMO. There's a lot of utility in the latter even when the former is dangerous, and treating it as a layout and templating exercise helps avoid the “your content lives in the cracks of a one-off layout” problem.
One of the big needs IMO is presenting users with a fuller toolbox to handle variation and design direction — not JUST same-old templates or one-off pages…
