   Scott Alexander from slate star codex /astral codex 10 released this graphic showing how many people subscribe to his substack blog. the monthly subscription cost is $10, so he's making over 50k a month with this. No wonder that anyone with even a little following (he only has 100k overall subscribers) will go to substack or patreon instead of the washington post or the new york times.

     $10 is expensive for a blog/newsletter except for the few countries where your income is really high, I don't get how it is ever popular to charge so much.
