@ageha @lain @Moon I wonder if this can be linked to McLuhan's "hot and cool media" concept. Books and television demand very different levels of involvement from the audience, leading to different perceptions of the same subject matter.
There is also the issue of scarcity - only a few television networks with high barrier to entry, versus thousands of books and relatively low barriers. This would affect publishers' behaviour even if not audience reactions directly.
